Its been a long long time!

2019 Update.

Its been a long long time since we wrote a post. That’s mainly due to us being so busy doing up furniture, which we love to do. We have found that updating our Facebook page @Saffron Cottage Furniture as been the easiest way to keep in regular touch with you, but we are going to have a look at revamping our web site soon to make things easier for everybody.

Saffron Cottage Furniture Showroom at Fat Apples September 2019.

This year has been our best yet! We have been continually re stocking our showroom, which is at Fat Apples Cafe, Porthallow, Near St Keverne, Cornwall, TR12 6QH. The staff at the cafe are more than happy to help you with the furniture should you wish to buy, or you can contact us direct. Many people who see our furniture there pledge to buy it and then either pick up when they can or contact us to deliver locally. We are more than happy to hang onto pieces for a few days until you are ready. Or we can bring back items to our workshop in Hayle for easier pick up by you. Just let us know what suits you best.

We are also selling quite a few pieces on Facebook’s Market Place, so keep an eye out for us there.

Finally we are also carrying out more and more commission work on clients own pieces. If the piece is large and you are local we can do it on site, or we can pick it up and carry out the work at our workshop in Hayle. Feel free to contact us for a free consultation and quote. Sometimes it just makes sense to revamp your own quality furniture.

The Shop is Open For Summer 2016 !

Well we managed to get the shop open for Easter, with a whole new lot of stock. Have a look around the web site to see if anything takes your fancy or pop down to Fat Apples Cafe, Porthallow TR12 6QH for a proper look. They also have some smaller bits on display inside the cafe. Here is a before and some after pictures. We are proud as punch of ourselves and love our new look.

As well as this, we have had an interesting commision job from a lady who had a built a beautiful garden room. After buying a fantastically funky chair she decided to have her mother’s old brown wooden 1970’s coffee table upcycled into something a bit special to fit in. See what you think?

We have just taken stock of a whole new load of beautiful old furniture to breathe new life into, so watch this space if you are looking for wardrobes, drawers and dressing tables.

Revamping the shop.

Some of you may think we have been a bit idle these last few months, but we have been busy! We have been painting and updating our gorgeous holiday homes ready for the season. Still a few dates for booking available. Why not take a look.

As well as that we have managed to revamp our little shop area at Fat Apples Cafe (

Do you remember the rough brown walls at the shop?

Well we have set to and completely revamped the old rotten outside wall and renewed the inner walls with new wood, paint and painted ship-lap from an old fence that was taken down.

Using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint’s watered down giving a washed out effect, it has really brightened up the space.

We can’t wait to fill it up with furniture for the start of the season at Easter.

Have a look below and see what you think?

A Busy Summer

Hello everyone. So sorry for the lack of posts this summer. We have been so busy, but we thought its about time to bring you up to date.

This summer has seen the introduction of Samphire Barn holiday let to our business. It took us about 12 weeks of really hard work, with the help of some great tradesmen to pull ceilings down, put in new electrics, plumbing, bathroom, rebuilding and decorating, but we got there in the end. It was well worth the effort as the barn was fully booked throughout the summer. It looks and feels sumptuous. In fact its so nice we daren’t move back into it and mess it up, so it is available all winter for a break, including Christmas and New Year.

As we have moved downstairs in the property we needed something to contain our office, so we set about restoring and painting a lovely antique glass fronted bookshelf just for us. We even got creative and made a copper piping balustrade to go around the staircase making it safe for little visitors and only last week we had a brand new log burner installed so it is now super cosy throughout the winter.

If you want to look at the barn in more detail and maybe even book a long or short break to Cornwall, please copy and paste this link into your search engine and it should take you straight to it.

So, due to being so busy this summer, the furniture has taken a bit of a back seat, but we are now back to it. We have started to renovate the workshop and have some lovely exciting new pieces displaying at Fat Apples Cafe, Porthallow, TR12 6QH.

Why not take a drive and pop down and have a look, or have a look in detail at all our items for sale on this web site now. If you see something you fancy we have secure internet banking and its cheaper than buying our items through ebay.

Off to the workshop now to start preparing for the Christmas Fayres!

Our latest project

A Victorian Chiffonier

Our most recent project involved a rather tired old Victorian chiffonier or dresser which needed a lot of preparation. Lee’s carpentry skills were maximised, fixing and strengthening right through making sure every detail was now in working order. Caroline then gave it all a good clean down and sanded off as much old varnish as possible. Our strapline ‘Breathing New Life Into Old Furniture’, is never more apt than when we work on antique piece of furniture like this.

Once prepared the painting started using a shellac based sealant on the insides and back which are made of lower quality wood to the beautiful wood on the case. You will find that most old furniture is made in this way as top quality wood was precious in those days. This method reduces the chances of staining showing through the paintwork. The whole piece was then given two coats of Annie Sloan’s ‘Old White’ chalk paint.

The top did not lend itself to being sanded and polished. So another method was decided. Annie Sloan’s ‘Original chalk paint was used and then heavily waxed in dark wax. The result was quite stunning.

Finally the whole piece was waxed twice in Annie Sloan’s soft wax and lightly stressed to enhance the beautiful detail and carvings in the design and put together in all it’s glory.

Finally when renovating it we found an old Victorian penny dated 1889. So we have fixed this inside so it stays with the piece forever. It’s next to the lovely original cold tray which is still beautifully lined in the original lead.

We hope you enjoyed our little insight into our latest project. This piece is now for sale on the website for £495.00 with FREE DELIVERY to anywhere in England.

Wedding Bells !

Sorry we have been a bit quiet of late but we recently got married. Our van was our wedding car!

We had a fantastic day in the Cornish sunshine.

Any way we are back to it now. Lee is retiring from the Navy and we are hoping to up production and carry out more commision work. So if you have some lovely pieces of furniture in your home that fit your needs perfectly, but need a bit of a spruce up, get in touch for a quote we would love to help.

Commission Work

Since last summer we have been taking on more and more commission work. One of our clients decided to revamp her late fathers furniture from dull brown to exciting fresh new white and completely transform her apartment. Some examples below.

And we don’t just do white. You can have your furniture painted whatever colour you like, with whatever knobs or handles you want. Just give us a call to discuss what you want.

Deliveries, Commision Work, Selling

Well its been so busy, I’m not sure where to start!

Now we have the van; where we can, we are delivering ourselves. We have sold and delivered the small Chiffonier to a very satisfied customer in London. On our way up to and back from London, we absolutely jammed the van full with many more lovely pieces which we managed to source. In fact we couldn’t fit them all in, so Lee is picking up another load today.

The shop is doing well, having sold the blue pyramid drawers and a lovely rocking chair.

The large 7ft chiffonier is finished and ready to be put together for a visit tomorrow by a client with a view to buying. It all depends on the final measurements as to whether it will fit the customers space, so keep your fingers crossed. If not, it will go down the shop and make a splendid display whilst waiting for the right person to find it.

We have placed some new items on ebay for a ‘buy it now price’, which seems to be doing it well. These can be accessed through our Facebook page if you are interested. Just use the Facebook button at the bottom of the website. Please feel free to start following us. It would be lovely to make some more connections.

On top of all this, I have been painting four lovely pieces of furniture for a a customer who wanted to keep her beloved late fathers well made solid wood furniture. It’s looking fantastic. I shall ensure I get some photos ready for the next post.

Until then, au revoir.

Furniture Shop

This week we added some more exciting pieces of furniture to our new shop which is situated beneath ‘Fat Apples Cafe’ Porthallow, Helston Cornwall TR12 6QH.

Saffron Cottage Furniture Shop

Although a little out of the way, the location gives you a fantastic drive out enjoying a beautiful part of Cornwall you wouldn’t necessarily think about visiting; but it really is worth a look.  Whilst there, you could enjoy a gorgeous lunch or afternoon tea with a top drawer piece of cake at the cafe and then maybe visit to the local beach and cosy village of Porthallow.

As you can see we have started to dress the shop with small nic-nac’s, all of which are for sale at reasonable prices, along with some interesting quirky candlesticks, mirrors, cake stand, and a pair of magnificent torchiere’s.  If you are interested in brightening up your home with a conversation piece in the form of an unusual well painted piece of furniture with Saffron Logo, then this is the place for you.

If you are unable to pick up the item of your dreams yourself, we now have our own van and can arrange local deliveries (at cost diesel), just give us a call on 07816 848 610.
